Dornier Do 22Kg

The Do 22Kg was one of the most "exotic" airplanes the Air Force used, as it was built in limited numbers exclusively for exporting. The export models were labelled as Do 22Kl, Kj, Kg and equipped according to the specifications for each country (g for Griechenland=Greece).

The flight instruments partially ordered from Great Britain as the Wimperis aiming sight. The radio was a Telefunken 40/70, while the oxygen supply equipment was built from Un. States. The G.S.C. sychronisation system of the Belgian construction fixed Fn-Browning machine gun, was built by France. It could carry "american type" Greek construction bombs and according to Hellenic Air Force demands, the sea-landing floating system could be replaced by standard landing gear system.

The Do 22Kg delivered between 1938 and 1939. They were enlisted to the 12th Naval Cooperation Squadron and used for convoy escort missions. Due to the lack of modern army cooperation airplanes, standard langing gear system was installed to 8 of them and assigned to the reconstituted 2nd Observation Squadron in spring 1941. They were anticipated to be used for night bombing missions against the Italian forces at Tepeleni, although it is mentioned that only one mission was made.

The conclusion of the Balkan campaign condemned them to destruction by air raid. One hydroplane escaped, during the retreat to Alexandria, Egypt, where it served under British command for a short period along with 7 Jugoslavian airplanes of the same type.
