Instrument Flight Training Center (IFTC)

Mission

IFTC’s mission is to provide education and standardization of the procedures, as instrument flying dictates. Its goal is to offer knowledge, exchange experiences and give directions in this critical for safety type of flight.

In order to achieve the above mentioned, IFTC teaches the procedures and techniques necessary for the proper execution of an IFR flight according to ICAO  and Aviation Authorities rules. (eg EUROCONTROL, FAA, CAA etc).

IFTC also systematically monitors the technological advances in Instrument Flying.

History

1976 : IFTC was established in 110CW, as a training center of instrument flying instructors with T-33 aircrafts.

2005: Due to the rise of participation of Hellenic Air Force (HAF) in international exercises and trainings and the consequent need of instrument flying in controlled airspace, the center was re-established in November 2005 providing theoretical and flying training to the pilots of the HAF.

2006: In November 2006 began the participation of Hellenic Army pilots as trainees.

2007:  Navy and Coastguard pilots join the school as well.

Organization Structure

IFTC operates under 110 CW and is considered equivalent to a training flight.

Education

The educational project of the Center is spread over an average of seven training courses annually. Each training course includes the following subjects:

  • Air Force Manual (AFMAN) 11-217 vol 1 & 3
  • Aeronautical publications
  • IFR mission planning
  • Air Traffic Control ( Eurocontrol )
  • Instrument Procedures Construction
  • Air Medicine
  • Meteorology
  • Flight Safety
  • Educational visit at Air Control Centre (ACC) in Athens.

After the theoreticall education, the trainees return to their mother bases, where they continue to the second phase of training, which includes the following parts:

  • Flight simulator
  • Basic Instrument Training Flight
