HAF Calibration Service (YPID)

The Calibration Service was established in order to service the Hellenic Air Force and the Armed Forces in general, to face the high technology demands of the modern theater of operations.

To this purpose contribute not only the excellent equipment of the Calibration Center, but also the skilled personnel, both military and civilian.

History

Two of the determining factors for the succesful mission of the Air Force, are the accuracy and credibility of the Weapon Systems. The Calibration Service is the core of the system which ensures the desirable accuracy and determinatively contributes to the credibility of the Weapon Systems.

To service this necessity the HAF methodically started the calibration activity in 1959, with the establishment of the Calibration Standards Laboratory at Hellinikon AB.

Today the calibrating and repairing works of the measurment or testing equipment, is carried out from four Regional Calibration Laboratories and one Limited Calibration Lab throughout the country, as well as the Central Calibration Service’s Laboratory at Vironas Attiki.

The accuracy and credibility of the Calibration Service standards’ is ensured by the skilled personnel, the strict controlled environmental conditions at the calibration sites and the collaboration with the internationally approved NATIONAL BUREAU OF STANDARDS.

Mission

The Calibration Service has been assigned with the calibration and repair responsibility for all HAF’s and Armed Forces equipment

The Service also issues calibration certificates as well as certification or deviation measurment reports and calibration tables.

All Certificates issued are fully traceable to International Standards

Equipment – Capabilities

The calibration Service operates three standalone laboratories which perform calibration on the following sectors:

  • Electronics
  • Dimensions
  • Electromechanics and Mechanics.

The laboratories are equipped with high precision equipment, calibration devices and reference standards.

With this equipment the calibration Service has the capability to measure almost all the parameters of the Electronics sector and the most important parameters of the Dimensions and Electromechanics sectors.

Most of the calibration Service’s models, are calibrated to the Service’s laboratories by means of the Reference Standards or the Primary Standards. Those devices are sent periodically to the U.S.A. (AFMETCAL) for calibration.

Instruments supported by Calibration Service

  • Voltage, Current, Power
  • Resistance, Capacity, Inductance
  • Frequency
  • Microwaves
  • Temperature
  • Mechanical and Electromechanical
  • Dimensional

Mobile Calibration Teams

Apart from the Central Service’s Laboratories, the Calibration Service has mobile teams which visit the interested parties perform on-site calibration of the devices which cannot transprted to the central laboratory (either because of cost, massive size or sensitivity e.t.c).

The mobile teams are equipped with specific portable calibration devices and are transported with appropriate mobile calibration vans. Those vans have environment control and special anti-vibration system to prevent the standards’ fatigue during transportation.

With their available equipment, the mobile teams have the ability to calibrate and repair a range of devices, Electronic or Mechanical, and Electromechanical as well.

Provided Services

Today, the Calibration Service provides calibration services to the military sector, as well as to the public, to domestic or foreign corporations (i.e Olympic Airways).
