On Tuesday, June 12 2012, a memorial service and wreath-laying ceremony were held at “First Lieutenant (AF) Nikolaos Sialmas” memorial, at the Fallen Aviators’ monument, at cape Sialmas, on Agios Efstratios island.
The ceremony was attended by the Minister of National Defence, Mr. Frangoulis Frangos, the Chief of the Hellenic Army General Staff, Lieutenant General Constantinos Ziazias, the Chief of the Hellenic Navy General Staff, Vice Admiral HN Kosmas Christidis, the Chief of the Hellenic Air Force General Staff, Lieutenant General (AF) Antonios Tsantirakis, the family of the departed, as well as by delegations of the local, military and religious authorities, and a large assemblage of people.
This year it is the 20th anniversary of the death of First Lieutenant (AF) Nikolaos Sialmas who lost his life during an interception of Turkish F-16 fighter aircraft that had violated Athens FIR.
