“We shall become much better than you”
This is a verse from a popular song Spartan youths used to sing while dancing. In that song, old men say:
We were brave young men, once …
Then mature men answer: But we are brave now, try us if you want! And the young: We, howevere, shall become much better than you!

Hellenic Air Force General Staff
Many decades have passed since the establishment of the HAFA, the roots of which can be traced in the relevant French Academies the first Greek Pilots and Engineers graduated from. It is with great respect and esteem that Historic Memory turns to the sacrifices and deeds of all those who have enabled our Country and our People to enjoy the privileges of Democracy and Freedom as well as the achievements of Civilization. Our aviators hold a prominent position in the list of giving and of sacrificing oneself among the many known and unknown heroes. Since the use of aircraft in the war operations of 1912 our Air Force has protected the skies of our Country against every threat.
In the context of its curricula, the Hellenic Air Force Academy produces and transmits knowledge to its Cadets in terms of research and teaching the aviation science and technology as well as the relevant theoretical, exact and applied sciences. It develops military virtues and military discipline in order to mould officers of the Hellenic Air Force (HAF) with military and aviation consciousness, higher education as well as social, cultural and political instruction & conduct, providing them with all the capabilities that enable them to become competent leaders with comprehensive professional and scientific training. In common with the Universities, the HAFA organizes Post-graduate Studies (PGS) and conducts scientific research in the fields that interest HAF.
The selection of the Cadets follows their success in the Panhellenic Univ. Entrance Examinations as well as their meeting the psycho-technical and athletic tests of professional suitability. There are two options to choose from. The knowledge of the peculiarities and the capabilities required by each option constitutes the substantial criterion for their selection. Nevertheless, the love for the Hellenic Air Force is a determinant element that the soul of every young man or woman wishing to become a Cadet must possess.
At least 2,600 Pilots, 1,200 Engineers and Officers of other specialties depending on HAF’s needs, have graduated from HAFA.
Today, all future Cadets can be assured that the Hellenic Air Force Academy shall always hold its doors open to all those who have the will, the faith and the love to further the HAF’s tradition and history. It is with great care that the Greek State has been improving the conditions, the studies’ environment and, further on, the development of the Cadets and Officers in the Chain of Command respectively. The work of the officer of contemporary HAF is considered to be special and significant by everybody and it is for this reason that he (or she) has the support of the Greek State in all fields, in addition to the respect and admiration he (or she) enjoys from the Greek people.
The Hellenic Air Force Academy’s mission is to produce and transmit knowledge to its Cadets, in terms of research and teaching the aviation science and technology as well as the relevant theoretical, exact and applied sciences; to develop the military virtues and military discipline, in order to mould HAF officers with military & aviation consciousness, higher education as well as social, cultural and political instruction and conduct, providing them with all the capabilities that enable them to become competent leaders with comprehensive professional and scientific training; to organize, in common with the Universities, Post-graduate Studies (PGS) and to conduct scientific research in fields that interest HAF.
School attendance for the Air Cadets is compulsory.
It is not permitted, for any reason, that an Air Cadet, to miss more than one year during his attendance ( in the meaning of promotion to the next class). Loss of year, due to flight inefficiency, is not taken into account. Otherwise he is expelled from the Air Force Academy ex officio.
The Air Cadets (Air Force Academy/Pilots’ Department) that fail in the flight training on the 2nd or 3rd year of studies or they are found medically improper for the flying personnel , but proper for the ground personnel, are able to be transferred after an application, to Air Defense Controllers Departments according to the needs of the Hellenic Air Force at the given time.
