Mission
Mission of the Supreme Air Force Medical Committee is inclusion of HAF Personnel in categories of physical fitness, airworthiness, as well as the examination and issuance of opinions on HAF personnel, in accordance with the legislation, with the aim of minimizing health losses and maintaining the combat worthiness of HAF personnel.
Responsibilities:
It constitutes the Supreme (second only to the Reviewing Medical Committee) body of medical examination, providing expert opinion and covers all the Hellenic Air Force under the name: Supreme Air Force Medical Committee (SAFMC). Since there are no Exemption Committees in the Hellenic Air Force (HAF), their responsibilities have been assumed, by virtue of the Legislation in force, by SAFMC.
The SAFMC responsibilities arise from the legislation in force each time, regarding the “Hellenic Armed Forces’ Medical Committees” and the “Assessment of the military personnel’s physical condition”.
The SAFMC examines and assesses from a medical point of view:
- The flight ability of any officer, warrant officer, NCO, conscript or anybody else involved in flights, regardless of the Hellenic Armed Forces’ Service they are assigned to.
- The flight ability of civil aviation personnel in implementation of the legislation concerning it
- Civilians, who wish to acquire a Private Pilot’s Licence (PPL)
- The physical competence of the regular officers in active service, the regular reserve Officers & Warrant Officers and the regular NCOs in active service as well as the Hellenic Military Academies’ cadets regarding issues on the changes to their career status in the Armed Forces.
- The physical competence of the Air Force Academies candidate officers and the directly commissioned officers
- Issuing long medical leaves to regular Commissioned, Warrant, Non-Commissioned Officers and Military Academies’ cadets
- The need and the conditions, in general, regarding the transportation of military personnel abroad for special treatment
- The physical competence of special categories of their branches’ personnel, as stipulated in the appropriate provisions.
- The physical condition of personnel suffering from illnesses, diseases or injuries not referred to in the Tables and Annexes of the Presidential Decree “On assessing the physical fitness of the military personnel”.
- Any issue regarding the health condition in implementation of the legislation on pensioning etc of those officers and servicemen who suffer injuries, in war and peace time, and are in service, retirement or dismissal status
- Any issue concerning the implementation of the provisions of the legislation in force on the medical treatment of the military personnel and their families in cases where expert opinion by the supreme medical committee is provided for.
- Disabled and war/peace time victims for the implementation of the relevant legislation.
- Cases requiring approval for transportation abroad for health purposes, concerning civilians liable to military service, as provided for in the recruitment legislation, or other individuals accompanying a sick member of the family of military personnel.
History
The Supreme Air Force Medical Committee (SAFMC) is an independent Unit, equivalent to a Group. It was established in 1931 and Chief Medical Officer N. Karastamatis was its first Chairman. The Committee in question is directly subordinate to the Hellenic Air Force General Staff (HAFGS), and HAFGS Medical Directorate serves as its staff authority.
The Committee comprises:
- The Chairman-HAF Senior Medical Officer
- Two Members-HAF Medical Officers, and
- The Secretariat
