The Hellenic Air Force General Staff(HAFGS), in cooperation with the “IKAROS” Public Benefit Foundation, concluded in a mutual agreement under which a Supermarine Spitfire MJ755 aircraft is to be granted for the purpose of its rebuilding and restoration to a flight status in order to participate in air shows and demonstrations of historical aircraft. The aircraft will bring the colors and the name of the Hellenic Air Force (HAF), while the expenses of this project, as well as the maintenance and support of the HAF personnel, will be borne exclusively by the Foundation.
Reconstruction works are already in progress at the premises of “The Spitfire Company Ltd” company in Biggin Hill, Great Britain, where it was transferred in April 2018, after the concession contract was signed by the Chief of the Hellenic Air Force General Staff Lieutenant General(P) Christos Christodoulou and the legal representative of the IKAROS Foundation, Mr. Dimitrios Kolias.
Aircraft restoration work is expected to be completed by the end of 2019 or early 2020 at the latest.
