The emblem displays a crow, which symbolizes the global digital war, as it flies, holding a film strip containing the name of the unit. The film strip symbolizes the unit’s photographic duties, while the electrons displayed on the top right corner of the emblem, symbolize the handling of digital information.

Mission

The 140 Operational Intelligence & Electronic Warfare Group’s (OIEWG) mission is to maintain a high level of readiness and effectiveness, through the proper organization and training of its staff and maintenance of its assets, which are at its displosal for the following purposes:

• For the successful performance of digital warfare operations
• To assist in the proper planning of unit operations, for the intent of revealing, recognizing and detecting enemy targets, as it also updates and maintains the database system that relate to the confrontation with enemies at times of war.
• To process photographic and video material, both in air and land, for the needs of the Hellenic Armed Forces and Public Services.

History

The unit was established on February 13th, 2012, following the suspension of the 140th Electronic Warfare Group (140th EWG) and the Joint Aviation Photography Center (JAPC). The 140th OIEWG assumed the tasks of both groups.

140 EWG

In 1975, the 140th EWG was established as the Electronic Application Center and was positioned at the Elefsina Air Force Base as a subordinate of the Hellenic Tactical Air Force.

In 1976, the 140th EWG was renamed as the Applied Electronics Squadron and was transferred to Larisa.

In 1989, it was renamed again under the title “Applied Center for Electronic Warfare” and it was repositioned to Elefsina as a subordinate of the Hellenic Air Force.

In 1992, its administrative and operational subordinance was transferred again to the Hellenic Tactical Air Force.

In 1993, it was renamed into the 140th Electronic Warfare Group with the purpose of pursuing Elecronic Warfare Operations.

In 2002, the unit was repositioned to the 110 Combat Wing.

JAPC

In 1954, the Joint Aviation Photography Center in Larisa was established with the purpose of pursuing aerial photography operations and processing that information for the needs of the Hellenic Armed Forces and Public Services. Until 1973, its abilities were rather limited.

By the end of 1971, the unit was relocated to a more suitable position, as the needs and demands for  for constant modernization was mandatory for the effective execution of its mission.

In 1973, it became an independent Unit as a subordinate of the Hellenic Tactical Air Force.

In November 1981, the unit’s abilities had drastically improved, as it became equipped with more modern photographic equipment, which assisted in the processing of photographic content and information for the Hellenic Armed Forces and other Public Services.

Since 1994, the unit participates in the “Open Skies” Treaty, as it performs active and passive photographic operations.

In 1999 the unit was upgraded to the level of a Combat Group.
